She's Heeerree

I'm sitting here on my yellow velvet sofa (the mommy only sofa), feet up, baby asleep beside me and the boys upstairs playing lego together. Bliss. Then is suddenly dawned on me that I have not updated my blog as to the baby's arrival!

Not to be outdone by her big brother, Kate wanted to make a grand entrance as well. She was four days overdue and with me being over 40 and previously having a c section, the talk of induction was becoming serious, only based on statistics and government regulations. I was able to negotiate with my midwife another week before going to the hospital to be induced. My week was booked of almost daily appointments for monitoring the baby but I was ok with that, I was hoping to get things going naturally.

Of course babies follow their own schedule and decided to arrive the next day! Just after midnight on the 14th I woke up with some contractions so walked around a bit and went back to bed. They started to come off and on throughout the night so I started to record them. Nothing serious but they did start to become regular around 6am so I contacted my midwife around 7, agreed to meet at the hospital by 8:30 and have this baby. Well, shortly after that call I was in the shower on all fours calling my midwife back saying that I was not going to make it to the hospital, my contractions had suddenly ramped up and I could not move.

Rob called his Dad to come take Owen to school and about 30 minutes after I called, the midwife arrived and checked me out. Confirming that I was fully dilated she got Rob to gather what they needed to deliver this baby at home, she called the other midwives to confirm it was going to be a home delivery and that they needed to head on over. At this point I don't remember much but that Kate arrived 45 minutes after the first midwife arrived and we were all surprised at how fast everything went given that Owen was a c-section.

To be honest, if I was to do it again I would definitely do a home birth. It was a great experience with such wonderful support from everyone and once everything was taken care of we were already comfortably at home so the three of us could spend some quality time together before Owen finished school.

It has been two months and we are all madly in love with each other.

Moments after
